WhatsApp Business AI in India: What It Does and How to Set It Up Right
Meta’s Business AI can answer customers, capture leads and book appointments in WhatsApp. What Indian small businesses should know before switching it on.
By Joy Prince ·
For most Indian customers, WhatsApp is the front door to a business. Meta says 91% of online adults in India chat with a business every week (citing a 2025 Kantar study). So when WhatsApp added an AI assistant for small businesses, it became one of the most important marketing updates of the year.
What Business AI on WhatsApp actually does
Meta introduced Business AI on WhatsApp for small businesses in India on 14 May 2026, rolling it out to eligible businesses over the following weeks. Inside the WhatsApp Business app it can:
- Reply to customer questions 24/7 using your own business information
- Recommend products and share prices and shipping details
- Capture leads and book appointments
- Work in Indian languages, with UPI payments inside the chat announced as coming soon
Setup happens in the app: open the Tools tab, choose “Your Business AI”, follow the guided steps and upload your product catalogue and documents. You can take over any conversation yourself or switch the AI off at any time.
Where it helps most
- After-hours enquiries — a clinic, caterer or showroom can answer at 11 pm instead of losing the lead to a competitor.
- Repeat questions — timings, location, prices, delivery areas — answered instantly, every time.
- Appointment-based businesses — salons, tutors, service centres and consultants can fill slots automatically.
- Catalogue sellers — boutiques and D2C brands can recommend products from their catalogue in chat.
Mistakes to avoid
- Feeding it outdated information. The AI is only as good as your catalogue and documents — old prices create angry customers.
- Letting it handle complaints alone. Hand sensitive conversations to a human quickly.
- Treating WhatsApp as your only channel. Customers still Google you first — your website and Google Business Profile need to match what the AI says.
- Skipping the follow-up. Captured leads are worthless if nobody calls them back within the day.
Tip: Connect the dots: add a WhatsApp button to every page of your website, link your WhatsApp from your Google Business Profile, and make sure your website answers the same questions your WhatsApp AI does. Consistency builds trust — with customers and with Google.
Is it right for your business?
If you get more than a handful of WhatsApp enquiries a day, it’s worth trying — especially for questions that repeat. Start small: load accurate information, review conversations weekly and keep a human in the loop. AI should make you faster, not less personal.
