Google AI Mode Is Here: How Indian Businesses Stay Visible in AI Search

AI Mode and AI Overviews answer questions before anyone clicks. Here’s how businesses in Tamil Nadu and India get cited in AI answers — not just ranked.

By Joy Prince ·

Search a question on Google today and there’s a good chance you won’t see ten blue links first. You’ll see an AI-written answer — an AI Overview at the top of results, or a full conversation in AI Mode. For customers that’s convenient. For businesses, it changes the rules: the goal is no longer only to rank, but to be the source the AI quotes.

What changed in 2026

Google has rolled AI Mode out to everyone in India and expanded it well beyond English and Hindi — it now works in languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali. People can ask by typing, speaking or pointing their camera, and get one summarised answer with a few supporting links.

Industry studies through 2026 report that when an AI answer appears, fewer people click through to websites — many searches now end with no click at all. At the same time, businesses that are mentioned inside the AI answer gain visibility and trust even without the click. Traffic from AI tools is smaller, but it tends to be people who are much closer to buying.

Ranking vs. being cited

Classic SEO asked: “Is my page on page one?” AI search asks: “Does the AI trust my business enough to name it when it answers?” The good news: the same fundamentals still matter most. Pages that already rank well, load fast and answer questions clearly are the ones AI systems pull from.

7 things to do this quarter

  • Answer questions directly. Start key pages with a short, plain answer (two or three sentences), then go into detail. AI tools lift clear answers.
  • Write the way people ask. Use real customer questions as headings — “How much does a website cost in Coimbatore?” beats “Our Pricing Philosophy”.
  • Add an FAQ section to every service page, with honest, specific answers.
  • Keep your business facts identical everywhere — name, phone, address and hours on your website, Google Business Profile, JustDial, IndiaMART and social profiles.
  • Earn mentions on trusted sites. Local news, industry directories, partner websites and genuine reviews tell AI systems you’re real.
  • Publish in your customers’ language. If your buyers search in Tamil, a well-written Tamil page can win answers competitors can’t.
  • Make pages fast and easy to read on phones. Slow, cluttered pages are skipped by people and machines alike.

Tip: Structured data (schema) is still worth adding for Google’s rich results — but one large study found it didn’t, on its own, increase AI citations. Content quality and reputation do the heavy lifting.

How to measure it

Keep watching Google Search Console, but add a simple monthly habit: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask (“best caterer in Chennai for weddings”, “website developer near me”) and note whether your business is mentioned. Track calls and WhatsApp enquiries too — AI-driven visitors often contact you directly instead of browsing.

The bottom line

AI search rewards the businesses that are genuinely helpful, consistent and well-known. That’s great news for local businesses that do good work — you just need a website and online presence that make it easy for AI to understand and trust you.

Quick answers.

Is SEO dead because of Google AI Mode?

No. AI answers are built from web pages that rank well and explain things clearly, so strong SEO is now the foundation for being cited in AI search.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews answers?

No. There's no ad slot inside AI answers — citations are earned through helpful content, consistent business information and a trusted reputation.

Does AI Mode work in Tamil?

Yes. Google has expanded AI Mode in India to regional languages including Tamil, so Tamil-language content can be surfaced for Tamil searches.
